Jan Ullrich auctions tour bike for Ukraine aid

Germany’s only Tour de France winner announced on Friday via Instagram that he was providing a special edition for the 1998 Tour of France in favor of “A Heart for Children”. The auction runs until April 6th. On Friday afternoon, the highest bid was 18,100 euros.

“The terrible war in Ukraine and the incredible suffering of the people and families there shocks the whole world. Everyone is shocked and my heart is bleeding too,” said Ullrich.

The Australian professional cyclist Lachlan Morton is also raising money for Ukrainian war refugees – with a non-stop journey of more than 1,000 kilometers to the Ukrainian border. Morton starts on Saturday in Munich for his trip via the Czech Republic and Austria to the Polish-Ukrainian border. The Australian expects it to take around 40 hours. He hopes to raise $50,000 in donations. His team sponsors support the project with a donation of an additional $100,000.

It’s not the cycling hipster’s first fundraising tour. Last summer he rode the Tour de France alone and unaided, including all transfers between stages. The 28-year-old was several days faster than the field and raised over $500,000 in donations for a charity that donates bicycles to children.
