In her World Cup debut on Friday, the 22-year-old from Carinthia scored 4,391 points, which was the second-best performance of her career. Gold went to Belgian Noor Vidts, who set a world record for the year with 4,929 points. Pole Adrianna Sulek (4,851) and Kendell Williams (USA/4,680) took second and third place.
Lagger mastered the 60-meter hurdles in a strong 8.76 seconds, but with a height of 1.77 meters she missed points in the high jump as well as in the shot put with 13.15 meters. In the long jump, the Carinthian managed a good 6.01 meter leap before she set the fifth fastest time of the day in the final 800 meter run in 2:14.57 minutes. That was enough for the ÖLV athlete to achieve her goal of a top 10 placement.
“I’m more than satisfied with eighth place at my first World Championships. In the long jump I was very happy with the six meters, which were very important. In the 800m there was quite a crowd at the beginning, so unfortunately I was a bit behind. But I was able to work my way up the field. I’m happy that the long indoor season is ending with such a result for me,” Lagger said happily.
On Saturday, Austria’s second World Cup entry, sprinter Markus Fuchs, will be in action. He was drawn in the fifth of seven heats over 60 meters. Also running with him is Italian 100m Olympic champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs. The top 3 in each heat and the other three fastest advance to the three semi-finals in the afternoon.
