Now it has been used for the first time in Upper Austria in thoracic surgery in the Linz Ordensklinikum.
Lung carcinoma is the deadliest type of cancer. 90 percent of those affected are smokers, more likely at an advanced age. The remaining ten percent are often younger and mostly female. In the smaller group, the cause is unclear in many cases, sometimes genetic defects are responsible. The insidious thing about the disease: When the first symptoms appear, the cancer is often very advanced.
Cancer is becoming more and more chronic
The highly certified thoracic center at the Elisabethinen in the Ordensklinikum Linz is therefore usually either severely affected with symptoms or patients with an incidental finding. “In the early stages, you can sometimes cure the cancer, later it’s about enabling as many years of life as possible with a good quality of life,” says senior physician Michael Schumacher, head of the Thorax Center. Extending life is getting better and better. Cancer is increasingly becoming a chronic disease.
However, this only works if those affected receive the right therapy quickly. With the DaVinci robot, surgical techniques can be refined in such a way that the wounds heal faster and without complications if the results are good. “The more precisely an operation is performed, the faster the wound heals,” explains Matthias Biebl, chief of surgery. This is important because then further treatments such as medication or radiation can be started more quickly. And time is of the essence in this type of cancer. (ie)
