Of these 4,020,000 private households, 2,358,000 were single-family and 55,000 were multi-family households. 1,526,000 people lived alone. In addition, Statistics Austria counted 81,000 non-family multi-person households, such as shared apartments.
The approximately 1.53 million single households thus represent more than 30 percent of all private households, according to Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas. The number of one-person households has almost doubled since the mid-1980s.
Fewer households with children
In only 27 percent of all private households do married couples or partnerships live with at least one child. Overall, the proportion of couple households with children is declining: in 1985 it was 37.9 percent and in 2000 it was 33.5 percent.
