2G obligation in Italy’s restaurants will only be abolished for tourists

The decision to abolish the 2G requirement in the interior areas of restaurants and pubs only for foreigners, but not for locals, is controversial. Restaurateurs threaten to protest. “The Green Passport control in establishments is an emergency measure and as such must be overcome when the state of emergency ends,” protested the restaurateurs’ association FIPE-Confcommercio. “Every day we have to assign at least one person to the Green Pass control to face a minority of anti-vaccination people who have long decided not to be vaccinated. This is a useless expense at a very critical time,” the association said .

Tourism Minister Massimo Garavaglia demanded that the extension of restrictive measures must be followed by economic compensation. “I have officially applied to the Ministry of Health for 500 million euros for the damage to tourism,” said Garavaglia, a minister from the ranks of the right-wing ruling party Lega. The Lega had called for the complete abolition of the Green Passport from April 15, but was unable to get their request through in the Council of Ministers.

The minister protested that countries like France, Spain and Greece, which like Italy have strong tourism economies, have eased corona restrictions. The danger is that Italy will start the tourist season with a long delay.

Italy ended the Corona state of emergency on March 31 and abolished some restrictions. From April, hotels, local public transport and shops will no longer require 2G or 3G certificates – i.e. proof of vaccination, recovery or tests.
