The midfielders Stefan Ilsanker and Alessandro Schöpf, who have recently been called up regularly, join the team, as do central defender Kevin Danso and attacker Andreas Weimann.
For Weimann it is a return after seven years. The 30-year-old from Vienna has played 14 international matches so far, his most recent being against Bosnia at the end of March 2015 (1-1). It’s been almost four years since Danso last used ÖFB. The defender last played against Brazil (0:3) in June 2018, but was called up in autumn for the World Cup qualifiers after several failures.
Grillitsch would have been the center of attention in Wales. After the Hoffenheim pro’s positive corona test, Wolfsburg legionnaire Xaver Schlager, who only returned to play a month ago after a cruciate ligament rupture, could be in the starting lineup in Cardiff. Danso replaces Lienhart and fills the role of fourth central defender behind Martin Hinteregger, Aleksandar Dragovic and Stefan Posch. And Ilsanker and Schöpf fill in the gaps created by the decimated options in midfield.
