He has announced himself for days. For a short time, the blossoms that he drove were covered by the Sahara sand, but since yesterday, 10.37 a.m., it’s official: spring has begun – and befitting it. Bright sunshine and pleasant temperatures allowed for extensive hikes or firn turns over Upper Austria’s still intact pistes. The temperatures climbed to more than 13 degrees. And that was just the beginning.
“Up to and including Thursday there will hardly be a cloud in the sky. It will be really beautiful,” says Josef Haslhofer, meteorologist at the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG).
Unpleasant east wind
The maximum daily temperatures, which will level off between 17 and 19 degrees this week, will not be felt to be quite as mild today and tomorrow: “The east wind will freshen up with peaks of up to 40 km/h and can be annoying,” says Haslhofer. From Wednesday the wind dies down – and the spring fever dominates. Because the air is very dry, there will be no snow melt yet.
From Friday, the azure blue sky will get a few white spots again: “Even at the weekend, the sun will prevail, even if more clouds appear. A short shower over the mountains is not excluded,” says the meteorologist. And from Sunday the east wind will be an unpleasant companion again. Another onset of winter is currently not in sight. “According to the current models, there could be a cold air thrust from the northeast after the weekend. But that’s still very uncertain at the moment. But it would be a big risk to say: Winter is over,” says Haslhofer.
The avalanche situation on Upper Austria’s mountains will also get slightly worse in the coming days. Due to the strong solar radiation, there is an increasing daily course of the avalanche danger. Conditions are currently very favorable at level one (low danger). (against)
