This is shown by the answer to a parliamentary question from the FPÖ by Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP). Accordingly, about the same number of educators left the school service as in the previous year. Reports have been mounting since the fall that more and more educators are turning their backs on the profession due to the stresses of the pandemic or in protest at countermeasures. However, this is not covered by the figures up to December 2021.
According to this, between May 2021 and December 2021 there were 1,651 departures of teaching staff at AHS and BMHS. In the comparison period from May 2020 to December 2020, there were 1,625. This leaves a minus of just 26 teachers – and even these should have nothing to do with Corona, as they were mainly due to 30 additional departures in September (750 instead of 720). In this month, teachers usually retire directly or indirectly, which is why there are many times more departures than in other months. In the last month of comparison, December, significantly fewer educators left school in 2021 (139) than in 2020 (167).
A total of 300 student teachers are currently working at the AHS and BMHS – not as a short-term corona replacement, but in “shortage subjects” such as mathematics/natural sciences or in the creative field. This corresponds to around 0.7 percent of the almost 44,000 teachers at federal schools.
