“They are chasing the Russians and taking them out of places where they had previously been,” he stressed, particularly in Mikolaiva city in southern Ukraine that defends access to the important port of Odessa. “We’ve seen this now increase in the last couple of days,” she said.
Kirby said, however, that he could not confirm reports from Ukrainian government officials that his troops had retaken at least one town and expected to take more in the coming days.
But it would be “consistent with the type of fighting and the types of capabilities that we have seen the Ukrainians use,” the Pentagon spokesman said.
Russia’s indiscriminate military strikes have devastated several Ukrainian cities since it invaded its Eastern European neighbor with tens of thousands of troops on February 24.
The number of dead civilians is increasing and more than ten million people have fled their homes, according to different reports.
Many analysts still do not see a clear way out of the war.
Later a senior Pentagon official reported that the Ukrainian military also launched a counterattack on Izium, a small town southeast of Kharkiv (east), which Russian forces had seized in an attempt to connect it with the pro-Russian areas of Lugansk and Donetsk.
“What we see today are significant fights by the Ukrainians to try to get it back,” the senior official, who requested anonymity, told reporters.
Among the problems faced by the Russians, he cited that “very specifically, it is difficult for them to talk to each other (the different columns of troops), and this leads to the use of mobile phones in some cases,” he said.
Also, he pointed out that “they run out of gasoline, they run out of food,” and that they even lack equipment to protect themselves from the winter cold.
“We have collected information showing that some of their soldiers have suffered (from the cold) and are no longer fit to fight due to frostbite,” the official said.
