The European Court of Human Rights will review all cases against Russia that occurred before that date, the Strasbourg institution said on Wednesday.
The European Convention on Human Rights stipulates that withdrawal from the agreement must be announced six months in advance. Russia announced its intention to leave last week. The Council of Europe then excluded Russia as a result of its war of aggression against Ukraine.
The European Convention on Human Rights was adopted in 1950 and came into force in the first countries in 1953. It is intended, for example, to protect the right to life or to ensure protection against discrimination. The European Court of Human Rights, to which citizens of the 46 member states of the Council of Europe can turn in the event of violations, monitors compliance with the convention. In recent years, a significant proportion of cases have come from Russia.
The Council of Europe and its Court of Justice, based in Strasbourg, France, are not organs of the European Union.
