This was announced in a statement by the regulatory body Roskomnadzor, which made the decision on the News.Google service at the request of the General Prosecutor’s Office, Russian news agencies said, according to the AFP agency.
Google’s news service “ensured access to many publications and materials containing false information on the development of the special military operation on the Ukrainian territory,” the statement said.
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Russia has considerably tightened its control over information spread on the Internet.
Many Russian and foreign media outlets, such as the BBC, were banned from accessing it, and US social networks Facebook and Instagram were declared “extremist” by a Moscow court. Access to Twitter was also restricted.
Last week, Roskomnadzor accused Google and its YouTube video service of “terrorist” activities.
