On Thursday, Kadyrov published a video on the Telegram messenger service, which is said to show a phone call between Russian MP Adam Delimkhanov and the “brave” Chechen fighters. He also announced “purges” in Mariupol.
“The guys radioed that they liberated the building of the Mariupol authorities and hoisted our flag on it,” Kadyrov said about the video. He further wrote that “surviving” Ukrainian “bandits” had “left their positions” and “fled”.
“Other units are advancing in parallel through the city, cleaning up the Azov dirt,” he added, referring to the nationalist Ukrainian Azov Brigade. “God willing, Mariupol will soon be completely clean.”
Mariupol has been under siege by Russian troops for weeks. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, almost 100,000 people in the city are cut off from any access to water, food and electricity.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry wrote on Twitter that the Russian army had launched a “new phase of terror against Mariupol” and abducted around 6,000 people to Russian camps.
