Black flags are waving in front of the municipal office and there is great dismay in Pischelsdorf (Braunau district). On March 15, Josef Rehrl Sr. peaceful of this world. In his long life, he always looked ahead, always had his finger on the pulse – for himself and for those around him. Constant learning and further training were a matter of course and enrichment for him.
Always interested in new things and never stood in the way of change, not only his family benefited from this, but also the public. For 23 years (1973-1996) Josef Rehrl senior was mayor of the rural community in the district of Braunau. Already in 1961 he began his work on the municipal council. Articulate, clever and by no means afraid of conflict, he used his gift at the lectern to the delight of his audience. Much of what constitutes the church today was created under his leadership.
Honors and awards prove these achievements. He also received awards for his voluntary work in local clubs.
Tireless dedication
Wherever he could get involved and provide support, he was there, whether at his desk or with a shovel in his hand. In 1988, among many other awards, he was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit of the Republic of Austria. After retirement, he took over the parish office without pay. The Diocese of Linz honored him with the Severin Medal for his tireless efforts.
His private passions were family, music and acting. There he also met his wife. Their marriage produced three children.
The rapid development in technology meant that the wheelwright had to change his job in the 1960s. This was followed by strenuous retraining to become a bank clerk. His accuracy and conscientiousness stood him in good stead. From 1966 to 1970 he managed the Raiffeisenbank Pischelsdorf and then changed to Raiffeisenbank Eggelsberg as deputy managing director. He always felt a connection to Pischelsdorf: well into old age, it was important to him to know what was going on in his community.
