Investigation into rape resulting in death
The girl died in Vienna-Donaustadt in June 2021. In this context, the Vienna public prosecutor is investigating a total of four Afghans for rape resulting in death. While three between the ages of 16 and 23 are in custody in Austria – two are in custody in Vienna, a third in prison due to a conviction for other offenses – the fourth had fled to England. He was arrested at the end of July 2021 and has since been in extradition custody, against which he appealed in January 2022. Apparently that has now been denied. The spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office did not want to say how the suspect was responsible for his interrogation.
Last week, the lawyers for the bereaved spoke out in favor of speeding up the process because the extradition of the suspect was still dragging on. Florian Höllwarth and Johannes Öhlböck had suggested separating the proceedings according to Section 27 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (StPO), because the delay was an “unreasonable burden” for the family. With the extradition, the results of the investigation could be completed more quickly and charges could soon be brought.
The 22-year-old at the time of the crime fled Austria after finding the body lying on a green area and fled across Europe to England. At the end of July 2021, the native Afghan was arrested in a London hotel and has been in extradition custody since then. Three compatriots aged – allegedly – 16, 18 and 23 were arrested shortly after the crime, two are in custody in Vienna, the 23-year-old is no longer considered directly involved, but is in prison for other offenses.
According to previous investigations, the 13-year-old from the Lower Austrian district of Tulln met the youngest suspect on Vienna’s Danube Canal on June 25 of the previous year, where she is said to have been administered ecstasy. Then she is said to have been brought to the 18-year-old’s apartment by the alleged 16-year-old and the 22-year-old Afghan, where the fourth suspect also went. There, the girl was allegedly given more drugs. At least two of the four men are said to have raped her.
When the 13-year-old lost consciousness, the men got nervous. The suspects are said to have given her milk and yoghurt and held her under a shower. But the young teenager showed no more signs of life. They are said to have wrapped the girl in a carpet and leaned against a tree on a green verge. Passersby discovered the body the next morning.
