In operation since 2010, the Allegro are owned by Karelian Trains, a joint venture between the Finnish state-controlled railway company VR Group and Russia’s RZD. Until now, they were the only passenger trains running between the European Union and Russia. The other routes, as well as the air connections, are suspended, the Sputnik and Europa Press news agencies reported.
“As far as Allegro is concerned, the situation has changed and keeping its traffic is no longer appropriate from the point of view of the public owner,” said European Affairs and Corporate Governance Minister Tytti Tuppurainen Helsingin Sanomat.
Earlier this month VR Group notified RZD of the decision to suspend contacts, but the Allegro’s continued to circulate so that Finnish nationals could return from Russia. All the people who expressed the desire to repatriate, according to Tuppurainen, have already done so.
