If there are no large amounts of rain by the end of the month, March could be the driest month in the past 60 years.
The current drought is caused by recurring high-pressure influences over north-western Europe. High-pressure systems over Europe block low-pressure systems that could move in from the Atlantic. This results in Europe not getting any precipitation.
consequences for agriculture
If it rains less than necessary for several weeks or months, this leads to dry soil. As a result, plants and animals suffer, and finally the lack of precipitation is reflected in low water levels in bodies of water. In agriculture, drought can cause poorer harvests and affect the food supply. A dry month does not lead to drought. If the general weather situation changes, the system can normalize again. Nevertheless, the months of March and April have become increasingly drier over the past 30 years.
