Society must develop more understanding for the farmers and appreciation for their work and pay fair prices. And Austria must reduce land use. All of these demands were mentioned yesterday by hail insurance chief Kurt Weinberger at a press conference.
Weinberger referred to a scenario study by the futurologist Matthias Horx, which he had prepared on behalf of hail insurance. “Focal points” in agriculture are built-up areas and drought. “There is no other country in the whole of Europe that is so carelessly destroying the soil day after day through construction,” criticized Weinberger.
In the past 25 years, 150,000 hectares of agricultural land in Austria have been “destroyed by construction”. According to Horx, a scenario is desirable in which organic farming optimized through digitalization produces exactly the right quantities of food in a sustainable manner.
