Crime mystery dating back years is now solved

The mystery has been solved: the safe that was discovered by an excavator driver on February 14th during excavations in the Salzach riverbed in the city of Salzburg was stolen during a burglary on New Year’s Eve on January 1st, 2020 in Bad Ischl. The safe is now handed over to the owner. A suspect was arrested just over two years ago.

The room safe was brought to light by an excavator shovel at Elisabethkai. It contained keys, jewelery and watches of apparently little value. The investigations into the owner initially did not bring any concrete results, but have now been successful in cooperation with the Upper Austrian police.

When a private residential building in Bad Ischl was broken into on New Year’s Eve 2019/2020, the window grille was torn out and the window forced open. The perpetrator stole jewelry, watches and cash, as reported by the Upper Austria State Police Headquarters on April 16, 2020. The stranger pried the walled-in cupboard out of the wall and made off with the safe and the loot.

A few days later, on January 17, 2020, a suspected 39-year-old Georgian was arrested. The man, who lived in Salzburg, was taken to Wels Prison. The investigators were also able to gain insights into the investigation of accomplices. It was not initially known whether the perpetrator or perpetrators had already been convicted of the burglary.
