Poland: Already counted 2.3 million refugees

This was announced by the Polish border guard on Twitter on Sunday. On Saturday alone there were around 31,100 people. This is an increase of 2.2 percent compared to the previous day. There is currently no official information on how many of the war refugees stayed in Poland and how many have already traveled on to other EU countries.

Around 339,000 people have crossed the border from Poland to Ukraine since the war began on February 24. According to earlier information from the border guard, the majority of these travelers are Ukrainian citizens who are returning to their home country. Many men, but also women, want to join the Ukrainian troops there and fight against the Russian attackers. Others return to care for children or dependents in need.

Ukraine – the largest country in Europe by area – had a population of more than 44 million before the Russian attack began. Poland and Ukraine are connected by a national border that is more than 500 kilometers long.

So far around 30,000 refugees registered in France

According to the government, France is preparing for 100,000 war refugees from Ukraine. Around 30,000 Ukrainians have arrived so far, Housing Minister Emmanuelle Wargon said on Sunday. Half of them continue their way to other countries like Spain. Around 40,000 Ukrainians lived in France before the war.

14,757 refugees arrived in Greece

14,757 Ukrainian refugees have arrived in Greece since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Among them were 4,669 minors, the Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection announced on Sunday. All refugees receive a social security number and a tax number immediately after their registration, so that they can open an account in Greece. Most of the refugees arrive at the Bulgarian-Greek border crossing of Promahon on the Ukraine-Romania-Bulgaria route, the ministry said in Athens.

Athens has opened three refugee camps. They were built in the course of the large influx of refugees from Syria and other Asian and African countries over the past seven years. Some of these camps are currently empty. The first of these is just five kilometers from the Promahon border crossing and has numerous air-conditioned container homes. People can recover there from the long flight and get clothing and food, state television (ERT) reported on Sunday.

A total of 15,000 refugees can be immediately admitted to such camps in Greece. Another 15,000 places in camps could be completed in the next few weeks. Athens is ready to take in more refugees from Ukraine. The EU would have to coordinate this, according to sources in the Ministry of Migration on Sunday.

Most of the refugees from Ukraine who have come to Greece so far have stayed with relatives and friends who emigrated to Greece after the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 and settled there.
