Much stricter guidelines will be introduced, British Education Minister Nadhim Zahawi reported to the BBC on Sunday. “It’s appalling what happened. No child should be subjected to such trauma.”
Metropolitan Police (Met) officers suspected cannabis was in possession of the then 15-year-old girl. For the search, the police officers took the teenager out of an exam at school. They didn’t find any drugs. The parents were not informed.
The incident happened back in 2020 but only recently became public, sparking outrage across the country. The girl has sued the police and the school over the incident. For her own protection, the girl is only called “Child Q”. Police have apologized to the teenager and admitted the strip search should never have taken place.
The Met had recently come under criticism – among other things, due to discriminatory or misogynist behavior by some police officers. The murder of a young woman by a police officer last year caused horror.
