But a little later, and with the results already confirmed (49.8% to 48.8), the former union leader adjusted his sights and called on the Government to “see the shock that just had” because this referendum marked that half of the citizenry does not follow “the way of legislating” of the LUCan omnibus law that for the sector enables progress on labor rights, among other things.
“What can be said clearly is that half of Uruguayan society does not agree with this form of legislation,” Pereira said in a dialogue with TVCiudad.
Pereira’s reading is that Lacalle Pou has less support than in the first round of 2019, so “he should think about whether dialogue is not an adequate mechanism.”
“A social dialogue is required. That unions, businessmen, retirees and political parties be convened to discuss the perspective of security and social protection 30 or 40 years from now”, he continued.
Alejando Sánchez, senator for the Popular Participation Movement (MPP), spoke along the same lines, for whom Uruguay “has two clear halves and more bridges must be built, not cracks dug.”
“We made an enormous effort, with many difficulties to explain the law, and we received very important support,” said Sánchez, for whom the great challenge now “is to build bridges and not dig cracks.”
Sánchez maintained that “there is a group of Uruguayans, almost 49%, who gave a very clear message that politics should have much more dialogue on major national issues. That is the biggest message of this referendum in political terms.”
“It is a message that to govern is not to command, it is to convince. If the Government continues to cling to an idea that everything is better, that it was done wonderfully in this country, the electoral result is not explained, ”he added.
With the result posted, the head of the Colorado Party, the former president Julio Maria Sanguinettifocused on highlighting the decisive role of his party in this victory of the No to the repeal of 135 articles of the LUC, and therefore to the Colorado position within the government coalition.
“The PC, as we all know, has experienced important political difficulties, but in this election we showed that we were decisive,” he told the militants who last night, despite the government’s call to moderate the celebrations, were euphoric.
