According to one of Jeanine Áñez’s lawyers, Luis Guillén, the hearing has been suspended because the commanders in question have not been declared in absentia, according to La Razón. This is the second time that the opening hearing of the trial against the former president. Several difficulties also arose at the hearing on February 10.
“The medical and critical situation that Áñez suffers has not been addressed, that shows that there is a prejudgment decision from the Public Ministry,” denounced the other lawyer, Jorge Valda. “Shameful, absolutely an abuse of power,” he added, according to El Deber.
For its part, the Ministry of Justice has indicated that “the problems caused to interfere in the virtual hearing and the excessive use of procedural resources by the accused party and their lawyers reflect a obstructive attitude and contrary to Constitutional Law to have judicial decisions within a reasonable time and without delay”.
Jeanine Áñez has open cases against her for the role she played in the coup in Bolivia in 2019.
The former de facto president is charged in the ‘Coup d’etat II’ case and has been accused of a crime of breach of duties and resolutions contrary to the Constitution for having assumed the Presidency “without complying with the procedures”, according to the Prosecutor’s Office. She is also accused of terrorism, conspiracy and sedition in the framework of the ‘Coup d’etat I’ case.
