A serious accident occurred on Monday afternoon on the Westautobahn (A1) near Vorchdorf (Gmunden district) in the direction of Vienna. Two trucks and a car collided, one of the drivers, a 55-year-old from the Wels-Land district, died. Two emergency helicopters, several rescue vehicles, fire brigade and police were in action.
One of the trucks, driven by a 52-year-old Ukrainian, was parked on the hard shoulder due to a technical problem. The second truck crashed into this for an unknown reason. Due to the violent collision, the semi-trailer truck was thrown across the motorway and hit the car of a 41-year-old German.
The driver’s cab of the 55-year-old was crushed by the impact. The man suffered such serious injuries that the crew of the emergency doctor helicopter Christophorus 10 could do nothing for him. He died at the scene of the accident.
The 52-year-old Ukrainian also sustained serious injuries. He was brought to the hospital in Wels with the rescue helicopter Martin 3. The 41-year-old driver escaped with minor injuries. He was also taken to the hospital in Wels.
A specialist company had to salvage the vehicles. The motorway in the section in question had to be completely closed for the duration of the work.
