The Munich Administrative Court ruled on Tuesday that the bizarre one-way regulation on the bridge over the Salzach between Hochburg-Ach in Upper Austria and Burghausen in Bavaria must be lifted.
More than a year ago, the city council decided on a trial basis for the one-way regulation because of an increase in accidents in the area of the old town, so the Salzach crossing can only be used by vehicle from Austria. On the other hand, the commuter had sued. He drives to work across the bridge to Germany every day, but now has to take a longer route to get back. He did not want to accept the German safety argument, since the one-way regulation would increase car traffic on the alternative roads and increase the risk of accidents there.
“Remove immediately” traffic signs
The Munich Administrative Court decided in the hearing on Tuesday to “repeal the traffic law order for the tentative introduction of a one-way regulation on the Old Salzach Bridge in Burghausen,” the court said. The city of Burghausen has to “immediately remove” the corresponding traffic signs. The court had “doubts about compliance with the formal requirements for traffic tests”. The written reasons for the judgment will follow in a few weeks.
The mayor of Burghausen was “not happy” with the court’s decision, as he said in a video message.
