The danger cannot be “completely ruled out” and there is no time to distribute the pills in the event of a nuclear accident, Health Minister Alexandru Rafila said on Tuesday. He announced an information campaign for people because the pills should not be taken preventively. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been warning of the dangers of war in a country that, among other things, operates 15 nuclear reactors.
The iodine tablets are intended to prevent cancer after a nuclear accident. In several European countries, the demand for them has already risen sharply. In Austria and Croatia, doctors warned of the massive side effects of uncontrolled intake of the tablets. Iodine tablets should only be taken when recommended by the authorities, ideally shortly before or a few hours after exposure to radioactive radiation and within a 20 km radius of the accident site.
