Charim receives state prize for cultural journalism

The philosopher Isolde Charim receives the biennial Austrian State Prize for cultural journalism. “Isolde Charim is a precise observer and analyst of the political and social conditions in her home country of Austria and beyond”, the jury justified its decision and particularly emphasized her book “I and the Others” (2018). The 63-year-old works as a freelance journalist and regular columnist for the “taz”, the “Wiener Zeitung” and for the “Falter”. When the ÖVP formed a government with the FPÖ in 2000, Charim founded the “Democratic Offensive” platform together with Robert Misik and Doron Rabinovici. In February 2000, she called for a demonstration on Vienna’s Heldenplatz, in which more than 100,000 people took part.

The State Prize for Cultural Journalism is awarded by the Ministry of Art and Culture and, like the Outstanding Artist Award for Literature, is endowed with 10,000 euros. The latter goes to Florian Neuner, a native of Wels, whose work “in the most beautiful sense of the word – is a wide field beyond narrative clichés,” according to the jury. Neuner published “Zitat Ende” (2007), “Ramsch” (2019) and “Rost” (2021).

Thomas Stangl is awarded the Austrian Art Prize for Literature, endowed with 15,000 euros. This is awarded for a complete literary work.

In the children’s and youth literature category, the Viennese illustrator Julie Völk received the Outstanding Artist Award (EUR 10,000) and the photographer, artist, draftsman and author Willy Puchner received the Austrian Art Prize (EUR 15,000).
