Peru Pedro Castillo summoned the opposition to dialogue

“I make a call to sit down and talk and schedule the most urgent issues in the country, such as education,” said the president, who passed a political impeachment trial on Monday, eight months after coming to power.

“In this schedule that we have the central government or the ministers to the regions of Peru, the congressmen from each of the regions will also accompany us,” added Pedro Castillo during a visit to Puerto Bermúdez, a jungle district on the banks of the Pichis River, to about 450 km northeast of Lima.

On Monday night, Castillo was saved in Congress when only 55 legislators voted in favor of his impeachment, 54 against and 19 abstained, after a bitter debate of more than eight hours. 87 votes were required to pass the motion.

I salute that good sense, responsibility and democracy prevailed“, Castillo reacted minutes later on his Twitter account.

The radical opposition accused Castillo of lacking direction and allowing alleged corruption in his environment. In addition, they criticized his constant ministerial crises that translate into four cabinets in eight months, something unprecedented in Peru.

A potential dismissal of Castillo has been in the air since his election in 2021, when his rivals denounced “fraud” despite the endorsement of his victory by the OAS, the European Union and the United States.

Previous presidential “vacancy” motions led to the fall of two Peruvian leaders since 2018.
