Eye outpatient clinic is stationed at the Rorbach Clinic

PIPE BACH. A milestone in quality and also in comfort is the new offer of an eye clinic in the Rohrbach Clinic. The patients save themselves the trip to Linz for regular treatment of their age-related macular degeneration.

The Rohrbach Clinic has only recently started offering specialist care in the field of ophthalmology. This is made possible by a cooperation with the University Clinic for Ophthalmology of the Kepler University Clinic Linz

Age-related macular degeneration – a retinal disease – is one of the most common causes of blindness worldwide. In this disease, degradation processes and swelling occur in the retina. Without therapy, this leads to permanent visual impairment. This disease has been treated for many years by injecting a drug into the eye. This leads to swelling of the retina and an improvement in vision

Supply close to home

“This cooperation between the two health holding clinics shows the added value we can offer our patients in our regional clinics through close networking with the Kepler University Hospital. This example also clearly underscores the strategic direction of our company and is the best proof that graduated care can even lead to a greater range and quality of medical services,” says Franz Harnoncourt, Head of Health Holding and Managing Director of KUK. Because especially in times of a pandemic, it has become clear how important the regional hospitals are. “Through the cooperation with the KUK, we can offer the regional population top-level ophthalmological care. Until now, the residents of the Rohrbach district often had to make the journey to the central area if they had eye diseases. Now we can cover a wide range of needs close to where we live,” says Wolfgang Tenschert, Medical Director of the Rohrbach Clinic, about the expanded range of services.

The renowned doctor Matthias Bolz will take over the management of the ophthalmological outpatient clinic at the Rohrbach Clinic in parallel to his work as the head of the university clinic for ophthalmology and optometry at the Kepler University Clinic. He is a proven expert in cataract and retinal surgery and in examinations of retinal diseases. The core element of the new outpatient clinic is the minimally invasive IVOM procedure: “The active ingredient is injected directly into the vitreous body and inhibits the growth of the blood vessels that are responsible for the pathological vascular proliferation of the retina. In this case, the vitreous body acts as a drug reservoir and constantly releases some of the active ingredient to the retina and choroid for several weeks. This means that retinal diseases and in particular macular diseases can be treated directly”; he says.

First way to the ophthalmologist

In order to be able to take advantage of the service, you need a referral from the resident specialist to the KUK, where the first treatment takes place and further appointments with the Rohrbach Clinic are coordinated and planned.

Freistadt will follow soon

After the offer in Rohrbach got off to a good start, the Freistadt Clinic will soon be equipped with a corresponding offer.
