The shooting brought to 11 the number of people shot dead by Arabs in Israel over the past week, the biggest increase in attacks on the city’s streets in years.
An unprofessional video broadcast by Israeli television networks showed a man dressed in black and pointing an assault rifle walking down a street in Bnei Brak.
Israeli media, citing unnamed security officials, said the assailant was a Palestinian from a village near the occupied West Bank city of Jenin.
In Bnei Brak, witnesses said the gunman started shooting at apartment balconies and then at people on the street and in a car.
The Magen David Adom ambulance service said it had killed five people.
“The terrorist has been liquidated,” said ambulance spokesman Zaki Heller. Police said officers fatally shot the gunman.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
