The UN presented the team that will investigate Russia’s crimes in Ukraine

Erik Mosesformer judge of the Norwegian Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), who also presided over the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwandawas appointed chairman of the newly created independent international commission of inquiry.

The president of the Human Rights Council, Federico Villegas, also named two other personalities who will make up the team, Jasminka DzumhurOmbudsman of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Pablo de Greiff, from Colombia, who has been the UN’s leading expert in promoting truth, justice and reparation.

The creation of the commission was approved on March 4 by the UN Human Rights Council.

The resolution presented by Ukraine condemns “the violations and attacks on human rights as a result of the aggression of the Russian Federation” and calls for a rapid withdrawal of the Russian army.

The three investigators will be in charge of “collect, collate and analyze evidence of violations” of human rights and international humanitarian law stemming from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with a view to future trials, and to identify those responsible for such violations “so that they are held accountable”.

Thousands of people have died since the invasion began on February 24 and more than four million Ukrainians have fled their country.
