“I’m trans. Or to be more exact, I want to be. I’ve been diagnosed with gender dysphoria and have felt that way since I was very young.”he pointed out in a statement released on his Twitter account, which he shared with the message “it’s time”.

“I had no intention of sharing this with you,” the 37-year-old lawmaker said, adding: “I always imagined that I would leave politics long before I said this out loud”.

In his letter, Wallis specified that “wasn’t right” after being blackmailed and raped by a person he met on the Internet and believed the time had come to tell the truth.

The conservative deputy’s statement led to a flood of messages of support from legislators of all parties and even from Johnson, who praised him for his “immense courage”.

“Thank you, Jamie Wallis, for your bravery, which will undoubtedly support others”tweeted the premier, who assured that the Conservative Party will provide trans people “love and support” they need to be themselves.

However, according to The Independent newspaper, Wallis decided to share his story after a meeting of Conservative MPs held the day before, in which he allegedly Johnson welcomed by mocking the debate that has arisen in the opposition Labor Party around gender identity.

According to said newspaper, the premier would have said: “Good evening ladies and gentlemen, or as (Labour leader) Keir Starmer would say, people who are assigned male or female gender at birth”. Starmer has supported calls for trans people to get a legal gender recognition based on self-declaration and not in a medical diagnosis.

However, last week, Johnson insisted during a parliamentary debate that biology should be a key factor in identityas reported by the AFP news agency.
