After spring has given a strong sign in the past few days, the weather has changed completely from today: It is getting much colder and wet. Tomorrow snow may even fall down to low altitudes.
The change is already evident in the course of today: the rain in the afternoon will be accompanied by cold air that will slowly drift across the country. Sleet could already fall in the Mühlviertel in the early evening hours. While daily highs of 8 degrees can still be expected today, the thermometer will not show more than 2 degrees tomorrow, Saturday. It should then snow down to a depth of 300 meters, said Christian Resch from the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) yesterday. In the lowlands, meadows and fields could be covered with snow by around five centimeters, and around 25 centimeters of fresh snow can be expected in the mountains. The region along the Danube, where the long-awaited precipitation will fall in the form of rain, will not be affected.
Sunday night will be frosty at minus four degrees, and rain and snow showers down to low altitudes are also to be expected during the day. Daily highs: 6 degrees.
Because the cloud cover opens in the night hours, the night to Monday will be even colder with up to minus 6 degrees. During the day the sun shows up more often, which means that daily highs of 7 degrees can be expected. From Tuesday, warmer air will flow in from the Atlantic again. However, it will remain changeable and rainy.
Farmers are happy about the long-awaited precipitation, as Franz Allerstorfer, master fruit grower and state chairman of the fruit growing association, said yesterday. “We are incredibly happy that it is raining now, although the extent is still limited in the Mühlviertel.” By noon yesterday only around four liters per square meter had fallen, but ten to 20 liters would be necessary.
The forthcoming frosty nights are not yet dangerous for the apricot harvest.
