The focus is on teaching the main subjects Ukrainian, math and English. In addition, however, German language skills are also to be taught and social contacts made possible for the young people. For the time being, 60 students are to be looked after, there is space for 120 people.
The training center on Tegetthoffstraße in the inner city is provided by Raiffeisen Centrobank and operated by the city-owned GmbH Interface. “The educational career must not end with the escape,” emphasized Vienna City Councilor for Education Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS) on Friday in front of journalists. This also applies to young people who are no longer of school age.
The training center is headed by the Ukrainian Raiffeisen manager Iryna Khamayko. After a few days of shock after the outbreak of the war, people thought about what to do – then things went quickly. “We had the idea in the morning, in the evening we had the building.”
Cooperation with Ukrainian educational centers
Incidentally, it is still unclear when and in what form the Ukrainian Matura will take place. “That’s still under discussion,” said Khamayko. This will probably be in June or July, but one is dependent on the Ukrainian Education Directorate. “We make sure that the children can do them here on the computer and are cooperating with Ukrainian educational centers.”
In addition to preparing for the Matura, the children should learn the language of their host country with DaZ (German as a second language) trainers. There is also free food and psychological counselling. After completing the Matura, the center will also be available for childcare services until the end of August.
There are currently 12,000 Ukrainian refugees registered in Vienna, 40 percent of whom are children and young people under the age of 18. So far, around 1,100 of them have been accommodated at schools in Vienna – in addition, Ukrainian teachers are constantly being employed. However, they first need a work permit.
