UNESCO registered 53 cultural sites damaged during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Of the 53 sites that were harmed, 29 are made up of religious character, 16 are historical buildings, four are museums and another four are monuments. In turn, five of them are in the region of Chernigov (north), a city bombed by the Russian army and which appeared on a list “indicative” from UNESCO. In any case, the international organization continues to instruct a certain number of remarks.

In turn, kyiv planned to present its candidacy to the World Heritage list. “The kyiv region has another five damaged places and the Kharkov region has 18”, according to the UNESCO list consulted by AFP. The rest is distributed among the regions of Sumy (northeast), Zhytomyr (west of Kyiv), Zaporizhia (south), Donetsk and Lugansk (East).

As to whether Russia was the cause of this damage, the spokesman “hinted that Moscow was responsible”. However, in 1954, Russia signed a UN convention that seeks to protect cultural property in the event of armed conflict. In this framework, the Director General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulaysent a letter on March 17 to the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrovwhere he warned against “any violation of these rules”.
