Perms in men? That was once in the 80s. no way! This trend is making a comeback, especially among young people. “The difference from back then is that the curls are styled much more naturally and that this hairstyle is now called Merm,” says Alexander Geisbauer, manager of the hairdressing salon Haircutters in the Linz Promenade Galleries.
The term “merm” is made up of the first letter of the English word male (man) and the last three letters of the word perm (perm). For the current trend hairstyle, only part of the hair is often provided with permanent waves.
For example, the combination of longer top hair with small curls and short sides and back of the head (undercut) is particularly popular. The curls on top of the head can be styled in different ways: for example, falling loosely over the forehead, as worn by Luca Michlmayr (LUM!X), this year’s Song Contest representative from Austria (see picture below). “This variant looks very sporty and is therefore well received,” says Geisbauer.
However, this style is only possible from a hair length of five centimeters on the top of the head. Because the hair would have to be able to be rotated at least three times around the permanent wave roller. “If the hair is five centimeters long, there are quite small curls, with a length of around ten to 13 centimeters there are slightly larger ones,” explains the Linz hairdresser. Both variants could either be worn on the face or styled up with some gel (picture right below).
Also trendy: the surfer look
“But there is also a trend for men to have longer hair with slight curls or waves,” says Geisbauer. Here the barber would work with larger curlers. This results in a natural, slightly wavy hair structure, as the expert explains. This is the so-called surfer look.
The current hairstyle trends for women
“Avant-garde hair trends are currently conquering the international catwalks,” says Erika Rainer, WKO state guild champion of hairdressers with a salon in the heart of Attnang-Puchheim. Courageous and fashion-conscious women could let off steam this year, especially with the colors. “Highlights or emphasizing larger sections of hair with colors such as rose or lavender are in,” says the master hairdresser. Curls in all forms are also very trendy: from large curls to perms. “That applies to women as well as men,” says Rainer. It should be noted that the chosen hair style must also match the personality.
Frayed bangs
Frayed and overly long bangs like in the 1980s and 90s are back in fashion. According to experts, they have one big advantage: they conjure up every face ten years younger. So if you value being trendy with your bangs, don’t run to the hairdresser immediately when the ends of your hair reach your eyebrows. In addition, the “forehead fringes” can look a little disheveled. There is only one thing that doesn’t work at all: Greasy hair is particularly noticeable with bangs and should be avoided at all costs.
Pixie cut
He refines the facial features, makes the short haircut elf-like and the neck swan-length. “The pixie cut is the most elegant way to wear short hair,” some hairdressers claim.
This cut is a combination of different hair lengths. Some parts are only two to three millimeters long, others up to ten centimetres. Its name comes from English. “Pixie” means “pixie”. If you don’t want to look too well-behaved, you can style your hair in your face and twirl it around with your fingers.
Beckon
Women with natural curls can rejoice. Because for them this year is uncomplicated when it comes to hair styling. Natural curls and volume are no longer in style – whether as a long mane, long bob or short. If you want, you can conjure up a so-called layered look by strengthening the individual curls with texture sprays. And if you are not blessed with a natural head of curls, you don’t have to do without a curly head either. He can get a permanent wave at his trusted hairdresser.
