A8 motorway tunnel closed for four hours after truck accident

A 78-year-old driver is likely to have caused the accident on the Innkreisautobahn. She wanted to drive onto the A8, but because the traffic was so heavy, she stopped in the acceleration lane. Part of her car was already in the right lane. A Romanian truck driver therefore made an emergency stop and was able to bring his vehicle to a standstill before the car did.

A 45-year-old driving behind him was also able to stop his truck. But that was no longer possible for a following truck driver. The 27-year-old Slovenian was no longer able to brake his steered articulated vehicle and tried to swerve into the left lane. But that also failed, he drove into the truck in front of him. His truck then hit the left wall of the tunnel or the niche of the escape door and came to a standstill between the other two trucks. As a result of the impact, the 45-year-old’s vehicle collapsed completely – its trailer came to a standstill perpendicular to the direction of travel.

None of the drivers involved were injured.

As a result of the accident and the clean-up work, the Noitzmühle tunnel was closed between 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and there was a large-scale diversion.
