The 46-year-old owner started the wood-burning stove in his workshop and then drove away. When he returned around 3:45 p.m., he noticed heavy smoke and sounded the alarm. Even before the emergency services arrived, he was able to bring a car parked in the garage to safety and contain the flames with a garden hose.
A gas bottle stored in the workshop exploded due to the great heat generated. Nobody was injured as a result. The emergency services of the Bad Goisern, St. Agatha and Lasern fire brigades recovered a second gas cylinder from the danger area and cooled it with water.
The fire brigade was able to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the building and the roof structure. The entire wooden facade had to be removed for the post-extinguishing work. The inventory of the workshop was completely destroyed by the fire. The total amount of damage is not yet known, but it should be considerable, the police said on Saturday evening.
