Winter is back: up to 39 centimeters of fresh snow in Austria

According to the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), snow even fell down to very low altitudes like Vienna. Five centimeters of fresh snow were measured at the Hohe Warte measuring station (198 meters above sea level). The most fresh snow in the past 24 hours was 39 centimeters at the Sonnblick Observatory (3,106 meters above sea level, Salzburg).

The snow depth on the Sonnblick is currently 224 centimetres. At the Rudolfshütte Alpine Center (2,317 meters above sea level, Salzburg), there was 20 centimeters of fresh snow in the past 24 hours, and 15 centimeters at the Feuerkogel (1,618 meters above sea level, Upper Austria). On the Villacher Alpe (2,117 meters above sea level, Carinthia) it was twelve centimetres. Five centimeters of fresh snow were measured at the ZAMG weather station at the mountain station of the Rax cable car (1,547 meters above sea level, Lower Austria).

Lower altitudes were also white: According to the available ZAMG data, seven centimeters fell in Kremsmünster (382 meters above sea level, Upper Austria), in Allentsteig (599 meters above sea level, Lower Austria) eight centimeters, in St. Pölten (274 meters above sea level, Lower Austria) two centimeters and in St. Johann im Pongau (634 meters above sea level, Salzburg) six centimetres. Five centimeters were measured in Preitenegg (1,034 meters above sea level, Carinthia), and four centimeters in Reutte (850 meters above sea level, Tyrol). In Wiener Neustadt (275 meters, Lower Austria) there was at least one centimeter of fresh snow.

According to Thomas Wostal from ZAMG, cold air breaks are typical for April. In the past few years, there was still fresh snow every April, at least in some regions of Austria, even below 800 meters above sea level. In the very low altitudes of Austria, such as in Vienna, snow is relatively rare in April and only occurs every few years.

Most recently, there was snow cover (two centimeters) in Vienna at the Hohe Warte weather station this month on April 8, 2021, previously on April 3, 2013 (six centimeters) and on April 20, 1997 (five centimeters). The highest snow depth in April was measured here (Vienna Hohe Warte weather station) on April 3, 1996 with 18 centimeters.
