The number of new corona infections rose to a new high in the People’s Republic on Sunday. The National Health Commission reported 13,146 local infections – the highest number since the peak of the first wave over two years ago. It is striking that the majority of cases (11,691) are asymptomatic according to official information.
The government meanwhile reiterated its adherence to the “zero Covid” strategy. Therefore, Shanghai, the largest city in the country, is still in a nationwide lockdown.
During an inspection visit to Shanghai on Saturday, China’s Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chunlan emphasized the “unwavering adherence” to the epidemiological strategy, which provides for rapid curfews, mass tests and quarantine even for smaller infection strains.
Almost all of the more than 26 million residents of Shanghai are currently only allowed to leave their homes for the Covid 19 tests. Sports stadiums and exhibition halls, each with thousands of beds, have been set up throughout the city to isolate those infected.
Recently, residents of the metropolis have expressed increasing frustration on China’s social media about the strict curfews, precarious food supplies and poor hygienic conditions in the quarantine centers.
