Snow indeed – many compatriots could not believe their eyes on Saturday morning when they saw the thin blanket of snow that spread across the country during the night. However, it did not stay that thin during the day in many parts of the country: According to the available ZAMG data, seven centimeters of snow fell in Kremsmünster (382 meters above sea level) and 15 centimeters on the Feuerkogel (1618 meters). There was the most fresh snow with 39 centimeters at the Sonnblick Observatory in Salzburg (3106 meters above sea level).
Not exceptional in April
“Typical April weather,” says ZAMG meteorologist Alexander Ohms. The wintry picture may come as a surprise to many this year because March was extremely dry – but snow in April is not uncommon. “Anything is possible between early summer and winter in April, depending on where the wind is coming from,” says the expert. That’s why he wouldn’t be surprised if we even needed shorts for a few days during the Easter holidays: “It could be in the direction of the ’25s’, that would be the first day of early summer this year,” says Ohms.
This week, however, it remains changeable. Classic westerly weather is expected, brisk westerly winds are blowing again and again, but milder Atlantic air is spreading. It’s getting milder every day.
This morning we can expect widespread frost, in Freistadt it will be very cold with up to minus six degrees. Dress warmly in the rest of the country this morning down to minus three degrees.
Fruit growers: “Can you stand it”
These frosty nights are not a big concern for fruit growers. “We’re lucky that the cold spell is here so soon, the trees can take even more, minus three or four degrees isn’t that bad,” says fruit grower Franz Allerstorfer Sr. from Feldkirchen an der Donau.
Frosty in the morning, warmer during the day: the sun comes through all over the country and temperatures climb to ten degrees again. It will be uncomfortable on Tuesday, which will be rather cloudy according to meteorologists. “It can rain again and again,” says Ohms. It will also remain changeable and windy on Wednesday and Thursday, occasionally it can also get wet. Friday remains unstable. At the weekend there will be another push of colder air, especially at night there may be short snow showers again.
