Sirens, pagers and mobile phones roused the emergency services of the Behamberg and Wachtberg fire brigades from their sleep yesterday. At 2:53 a.m., the alert for a vehicle fire was received. Both fire brigades immediately went to the Sträussl site. When they arrived at the scene of the fire, one vehicle was already fully engulfed in flames.
The car was ablaze, which is why the firefighters had to arm themselves with respiratory protection and high-pressure jets. Neighbors, who used a tractor to pull the smoking car away from a settlement where it was parked in front of the houses, knew that they didn’t need to rescue anyone. The owner of the car had come home after midnight and gone to sleep. Then he noticed the smoke from outside, saw the smoke coming out of the hood and alerted the fire brigade. “The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when we got to the scene,” says Michael Holzer from the Behamberg fire brigade, which was deployed with 15 firefighters and supported by 13 comrades from the Wachtberg fire brigade. The fire brigade contained the flames in a short time, and one of the helpful neighbors had to go to the hospital with suspected smoke poisoning.
