Angela Merkel broke the silence and defended her decision to veto Ukraine’s entry into NATO

Zelensky criticized on Sunday night the Franco-German “miscalculation” that led during the NATO summit in Bucharest in 2008 to not admit his country to the alliance despite the favorable position of the United States.

“I invite Merkel and (then French President Nicolas) Sarkozy to visit Bucha and see where 14 years of policies of concessions to Russia have led,” he said, referring to alleged atrocities committed against Ukrainian civilians by Russian troops in this town near kyiv, which the Western powers described as “war crimes”.

In a brief statement released by her spokesperson, Merkel affirms that she “maintains” the relevance of “her decisions in relation to the NATO summit in Bucharest.”

“Regarding the atrocities uncovered in Bucha and other places in Ukraine, the former foreign minister fully supports all efforts of the government and the international community to support Ukraine and end Russian barbarism and the war against Ukraine,” the spokeswoman said.

Germany and France considered that it was too early in 2008 for Ukraine – a former Soviet republic, a neighbor of Russia – to join NATO, and that the political conditions were not right for it.

Merkel, who retired from politics last year after four terms in office, has been criticized after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine for her policy of detente with the Kremlin and for Germany’s growing dependence on Russian gas imports, during her years in power.
