With yesterday’s “bizarre appearance” by Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP), the matter was not over, said SPÖ federal manager Christian Deutsch. In a broadcast on Tuesday, he criticized that the anti-terrorist unit Cobra was “abused for private chancellor service”. The Neos also insisted on “proper” clarification of the cause.
Nehammer had “contributed exactly nothing to the clarification” in his press conference. The allegations on the table are serious, said Deutsch – and added: “The taxpayer-financed anti-terrorist unit Cobra is not a private service provider for parcel services and not a private transport service for the suits of the ÖVP Chancellor. If a state anti-terrorist unit for private chancellor service is abused, the red line of decency and morality is far exceeded, Mr. Nehammer”.
From the point of view of Neos chairwoman Beate Meinl-Reisinger, the allegations should be “properly clarified”, since Nehammer’s personal protection is after all public money. Nevertheless, she emphasized in a press conference that there are certainly other problems at the moment, such as Russia’s war against Ukraine and inflation – “and that’s where it comes from.”

The cause came up with a car accident involving apparently drunk members of the Cobra special unit, who were used as bodyguards for the chancellor’s family – and an anonymous letter that prompted the SPÖ and FPÖ to make parliamentary inquiries. Nehammer gave a press conference on Monday late afternoon – and tried to turn the tables. He emphasized that “a red line in the political dispute has been massively crossed” and that the safety of his family is endangered by the publication of details of the security concept.

Regarding the anonymous letter, Nehammer stated that “the untruth was alleged”. Of course, bodyguards would accompany his children to private appointments. The Chancellor denied that there had been manipulations in the investigation of the car accident. It would be “vile” to accuse him of interventions here.
Cobra boss: “Truth content is very low”
Cobra boss Bernhard Treibenreif also rejected the allegations made in the anonymous letter to “Zeit im Bild”. The allegations will be checked, but he can already say that the truth is “very, very low” and “that we will report everything”. The Ministry of the Interior had previously announced criminal charges due to false allegations and the resulting security risks.
