59 dead and almost 13,000 new infections in Austria

During this period, 12,946 new corona infections were registered, the seven-day incidence was 1,583.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The 59 deaths were well above the average of 42.4 corona deaths per day over the past seven days. Since it broke out, the pandemic has claimed 16,061 lives in Austria. 178.9 people per 100,000 inhabitants have died from or with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

After all, the number of new infections was well below the average of the past seven days of 20,313 new infections per day, which of course can also be explained with the new test strategy – only five PCR and antigen tests per month are free of charge. However, 375,744 PCR and antigen tests were reported in the past 24 hours, including 331,240 of the more meaningful PCR tests. The positive rate of the PCR tests was 3.9 percent.

For comparison: Exactly one week ago, on Tuesday (March 29, 2022), the authorities reported 22,830 new infections and 530,126 registered rapid PCR and antigen tests. Of these, 362,284 were PCR tests, 6.3 percent delivered positive results at the time.

On Tuesday there were 252,955 active cases in Austria, down 23,001 from the day before. The number of confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic is approaching four million. On Tuesday it was 3,912,606. 3,643,590 people have recovered since the outbreak of the epidemic, and 35,888 have been reported healthy within the past 24 hours.

Only 2,234 vaccinations on Monday

The number of patients with Covid-19 in the hospital rose again slightly by eight to 2,978. Of them, 224 people were in intensive care units, two fewer than on Monday and 14 fewer than a week ago.

Hardly any more vaccinations: just 2,234 vaccinations were carried out on Monday. According to the data from the e-vaccination pass, 6,816,209 people in Austria received at least one corona stitch. 6,192,557 people or 69 percent of Austrians currently have a valid vaccination. Only 158 vaccinations were first shots.

Most of the new infections were registered in Vienna with 3,802, which meant a clear gap to the rest of Austria. However, significantly more than 250,000 PCR tests were registered in the federal capital. For all other federal states together, not even 80,000 PCR test results have been registered in the past 24 hours. Lower Austria followed with 2,721 new infections, Upper Austria with 1,874 and Styria with 1,363. In all other federal states, the number of new infections was in the three-digit range: in Salzburg 838, in Vorarlberg 713, in Tyrol 662, in Burgenland 505 and in Carinthia 468.
