Boric calls for broader agreements to approve the new Constitution in Chile

The president, who took office on March 11 of this year, acknowledged having spoken with people who in the 2020 plebiscite voted in favor of starting the constituent process “and who today have doubts,” he said.

“We are in a constituent process where for the first time in our history we are discussing in a democratic manner, in an equal manner with the participation of the indigenous peoples, what our Fundamental Charter is going to be,” he said.

“These doubts cannot be simply ignored. The discussion is not only communicational, it cannot only be blamed on the external, there are also responsibilities of those who believe in the process. And my call is to seek the greatest transversality and breadth possible to build a Constitution that is a meeting point,” he asserted.

Boric wanted the plebiscite “to be a meeting point between Chileans and Chileans.”

“And that implies that space must be given to reflect, to think so that the agreements are broader than what they have been until now to modify what needs to be modified, and I have deep confidence in the convention,” he continued.

“I respect their autonomy and at the same time I do not pretend to be indifferent. Do not misunderstand that: it is one of the most important processes in Chile, but it is not a process for our Government. It is also a mistake to say that the Constituent Assembly is in function of the Government , the Constituent Assembly is in function of the next 50 years of Chile”, added Boric.

Chile began in 2020 to draft a new Constitution, a process that was born as a political way to dismantle the massive protests for equality that began in 2019.

The Convention, with a progressive tendency and with a large number of independent citizens, must draw up the first Magna Carta that emanates from a fully democratic process in the country’s history.

If approved in a plebiscite, predictably this year, the text would replace the current Constitution, inherited from the Augusto Pinochet regime (1973-1990) and considered by many to be the origin of the great inequalities in the country due to its neoliberal court.

On the other hand, Boric assured that he will seek to “create a Latin American community and have a single voice of its own.”

In this regard, he recalled that in June an all-American meeting will be held in Los Angeles and pointed out that he hopes that “before that we can reach that moment with a joint position on issues that are as relevant as, for example, the crisis climatic”.
