The many volunteers who work for us around the clock are involved in this: Red Cross, Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund, volunteer fire brigade, mountain rescue, water rescue, cave rescue and civil protection association. Upper Austria’s voluntary rescue and security organizations have formulated the concerns of the volunteer associations in politics and society in the OÖ Nachrichten. The figures for Upper Austria alone show how great the commitment is. Almost every second person volunteers in their free time for the socially disadvantaged, for civil protection, for nature, sport, art and culture.

In the rescue and security organizations alone, 120,000 compatriots are active and available around the clock. This is also appreciated by cabaret artist and OÖN columnist Günther Lainer: “Especially in times like these, I think it’s important that we are there for each other. I have the utmost respect for people who use their free time to serve society. I’ve experienced it myself how important that can be. 30 years ago I had an accident on the freeway and although there were no mobile phones at the time, the ambulance, police and fire brigade were there within a few minutes.”
