The Bolivian government expresses its discomfort at a new postponement of the trial against Jeanine Áñez

Through a statement, the Bolivian Ministry of Government, which is part of the accusation against the former president, explained that in the initial hearing to raise incidents and/or exceptions, 14 were dealt with, of which ten corresponded to those raised by the defense of Jeanine Áñez.

These, according to the portfolio, “were rejected for having resorted to approaches already used in the preparatory stage of the investigation.” Thus, the court sanctioned the defense attorneys of the former de facto president, “for making use of exceptions and/or manifestly dilatory, malicious and/or reckless incidents.”

The Bolivian government also indicated that the “recurring” arguments of Áñez’s defense are “that a trial of responsibilities corresponds to her” and that “the ministry does not have the legitimacy to accuse, when one of those involved was the general commander of the Bolivian Police and the events affected internal order and national security”.

In addition, they allege that “there was defective procedural activity, reiterating the arguments already raised and rejected” and “that they needed more time to investigate to collect evidence, when the crime for which she is accused is an instantaneous crime that materializes and becomes concrete with the simple act or decision contrary to the Constitution and the laws”.

We regret the recess decreed in the trial hearing until Thursday under subjective arguments, since Bolivia requires the investigation of the truth without undue delay.“, has riveted the portfolio directed by Eduardo del Castillo.

Jeanine Áñez’s environment stressed on Tuesday that the trial against the former president is “illegal” and “systematic torture continues” against her, whom she defines as a “political prisoner.” Her lawyers, for her part, described the trial as “theater” and believe that the goal is to finish in record time, without having the necessary guarantees to carry out the process.

The First Anti-Corruption Sentencing Court of La Paz has already postponed the resumption of the trial after the collapse suffered by the former president in the middle of the opening hearing of the process, among other difficulties.

During the hearing, there were technical problems, shouts and interruptions, in addition to the failure to comply with the procedures for the declaration in absentia of different former commanders and charges of the Armed forces.

The former Bolivian president has open cases against her for the role she played in the 2019 political crisis.

Jeanine Áñez is charged in the case ‘Coup d’etat II’ and has been accused of a crime of breach of duties and resolutions contrary to the Constitution for having assumed the Presidency “without complying with the procedures”, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

She is also accused of terrorism, conspiracy and sedition in the framework of the ‘Coup d’etat I’ case.
