A corresponding resolution was passed on Wednesday in Prague with 125 votes in favour, with no votes against. The Holodomor (murder by starvation) refers to a famine in the former Soviet Union caused by Moscow’s Stalinist policies, which claimed the lives of up to four million Ukrainians.
The resolution states that the Czech Republic recognizes “the artificially induced famine” as a “harrowing genocidal crime against the Ukrainian people and against humanity.” Fifteen years ago, the parliament in Prague condemned the Holodomor as the work of a “monstrous totalitarian regime,” but did not go as far as this time. In view of the current Russian invasion of Ukraine, a historic debt is now being paid, said Parliament Speaker Marketa Pekarova-Adamova.
Relations between Prague and Moscow have long been considered shattered. Just a few days ago, the Czech Republic expelled a Russian diplomat on charges of intelligence activity. At the same time, the government in Prague is supporting Ukraine with arms deliveries and humanitarian aid.
