Francis kissed a Ukrainian flag and asked to stop sowing blood and destruction

For Francisco, the act of war deplored by international organizations and governments around the world shows “increasingly horrendous crueltiescommitted against defenseless civilians, women and children”.

“They are victims, and their innocent blood cries out to heaven and implores an end to this war, that the weapons be silenced, that they stop sowing blood and destruction,” he claimed from the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall.

Yesterday, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskycalled for the exclusion of Russia from the UN Security Council for committing the “worst war crimes” since the Second World War, after accusing her of carrying out a genocide of civilians in Bucha, a city neighboring kyiv.

Russia considered that these denunciations are a “false provocation that serves to find a pretext to torpedo the peace negotiations.”

After denouncing Bucha’s actions, the pope Francis unfurled before the thousands of faithful who accompanied him a Ukrainian flag that a friend of his gave him yesterday.

“This flag comes from the war, from that martyred city, Bucha,” the pontiff explained.

“There are also some boys from Ukraine who are accompanying us. Let’s greet them and pray with them. These children must have escaped and arrived in a strange land,” he comforted them before giving an Easter egg to each of the seven children who, with two Adults accompanied him on stage.

“This is one of the fruits of war, let’s not forget them and let’s not forget the Ukrainian people. It is hard to be eradicated from one’s own land by a war,” Francis lamented.

During his weekly catechesis, the Pope had previously lamented the “impotence of international organizations” in the face of the conflict.

In his exchange with the faithful, the Pope also took the opportunity to thank the “solidarity” of the Polish people for welcoming people fleeing Ukraine.

“You opened the hearts and the doors of your houses. Thank you for what you have done with Ukraine,” he said.
