This is the first reaction of the Russian president to this case that has caused international outrage, and it was known shortly after the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, called to investigate the “horrible staging” that, he assured, took place in Bucha.
“Undoubtedly, the horrible staging in Bucha is necessary and should be investigated,” Peskov told reporters, according to the Russian news agency Sputnik.
The spokesman also stressed the need for the investigation to be carried out “impartially and independently.”
Last weekend, the Ukrainian authorities and the international media released numerous images showing bodies of people, presumably civilians, some handcuffed, in the streets of Bucha, located northwest of kyiv.
The town was under the control of Russian troops, who left it on March 30.
The Russian Ministry of Defense described the published photos and videos as “a new provocation”, assuring that during the stay of the Russian military in the city “no local civilian suffered any aggression”.
The Kremlin categorically rejected the implication of the Russian military in the murders of civilians in Bucha and demanded that there be an international debate on the matter.
The Ukrainian government claims that the massacre was committed by the invading forces and uses satellite images according to which it is observed that some corpses were found in the streets of Bucha as early as mid-March, when the city was dominated by Russian troops.
